Photo Highlights of STAFDA’s 29th Annual
Convention & Trade Show
November 6-8, Baltimore, MD
 |
Known
as "Charm City," perfect weather greeted
a record-setting 4,838 attendees who were charmed
for three days by Baltimore during STAFDA's 29th Annual
Convention & Trade Show, November 6-8. The Mid-Atlantic
location proved to be a good draw due to its convenient
east coast location, area attractions, and STAFDA's
Convention agenda. Six hotels provided official Convention
housing, ranging from a Days Inn to the upscale Baltimore
Marriott Waterfront. The hotels and the modern Baltimore
Convention Center were all clustered around the city's
crown jewel: the Inner Harbor.
|
| STAFDA's
Tech & Consultants' Fair opened
the Convention and featured 28 hardware, software,
GPS, business platform, and e-business providers.
Attendees had the opportunity to see what's new in
the world of technology to help streamline company
operations. Of the 28 vendors, 13 made their STAFDA
debut in Baltimore. A handout detailing the vendors
and STAFDA consultants was available at the Fair.
|
 |
 |
Also
at the Fair were 11 STAFDA-endorsed consultants and
service providers to individually meet with members.
STAFDA's Credit & Collections consultant, Abe
WalkingBear Sanchez (right foreground) and
Dr. Bart Basi (third from right), STAFDA's
Tax & Financial consultant, provided one-on-one
advice to STAFDA attendees. STAFDA members get up
to 30 minutes free every year with each of STAFDA's
dozen consultants. That's 360 minutes of free consulting
advice!
|

Concurrent
to the Tech Fair were one-hour workshops featuring
two STAFDA consultants. Jon Schreibfeder
(left), STAFDA's Inventory consultant,
addressed how to achieve effective inventory management
by balancing branch location inventory, knowing
when to replenish, and how to better forecast future
demand. Following a short break, STAFDA's Showroom
& Warehouse consultant, Bob Footlik
(right), explained how to create an efficient warehouse
system and accurately maintain and track inventory.
Both workshops were "standing room only"
and it marked the first time STAFDA partnered two
of its consultants together whose subjects complemented
each other.

Sunday
afternoon's Rap Sessions had a different
format than past years. Distribution industry experts,
Michael Marks (left) and John
Haskell (right), presented a "Best Practices"
overview at the Full Rap Session when distributors,
manufacturers, and rep agents were in attendance.
Once Marks and Haskell gave their perspectives on
the industry, they gave the audience three questions
to discuss before calling on table leaders to report
their findings. |
After
the Full Rap Session, Mike Marks facilitated a
Distributor Rap Session and Haskell led a
first-ever Associate/Rep Rap Session.
Marks asked distributors to call out their top business
challenges and wrote them on a flip chart. He answered
each one and provided the audience with conclusive
feedback. Haskell, meanwhile, helped open lines of
communication between manufacturers and reps by putting
key issues on the table. |
Spouses/companions
meanwhile could hear two interesting programs. Deborah
Sherwood (left), an expert on America's First
Ladies, gave an informative talk on the 43 women who
have resided in the White House. Her talk was timely
for those who had pre-registered for STAFDA's Washington
D.C. tour which included a White House tour. After
a short break, it was "lights, camera, action"
as Susan Granger (right) gave a colorful
presentation on Hollywood moneymaking and myths.
|
 |
| STAFDA's
Ultimate Sports Night at Camden Yards was
a home run! The Opening Party had something for every
sports fan, music for every musical taste, and plenty
of roving team mascots and other characters to keep
the night fun! STAFDA took over the entire ballpark
and adjacent eight-story Warehouse complex for three
hours. The award-winning Frederick Douglass
High School Band and Baltimore Ravens
Cheerleaders welcomed everyone to the sports-lovers
extravaganza. |
 |
 |
Once
inside the complex, attendees used color-coded maps
to help navigate through the different sporting and
entertainment sections. There was a baseball area,
basketball section, football, hockey, billiards, gaming
section and more. Vintage games such as domed air
hockey, Donkey Kong, Frogger, pinball machines, and
other games complemented the foosball tables.
|
| Musical
entertainment included a jazz band, Motown, rock,
Karoke, blues band, and Dueling Pianos. Some STAFDA
members even got on stage at the Country musical stage
despite the band playing behind chicken wire!

 |
Monday's
General Session opened with an eight-piece brass ensemble,
March Militaire, who performed the
Canadian and U.S. anthems, followed by the "Year-
in-Review" video presentation. An awards ceremony
and remarks from STAFDA's executive director, Georgia
Foley, were given before STAFDA president,
Marshall Jones (right), gave the
Distributor State-of-the-Industry address. He focused
on distributor-manufacturer relationships.
|
| Associate
State-of-the-Industry speaker, Ed Gericke,
senior vice president, Werner Co.,
provided an overview and statistics on the climbing
equipment industry before turning his attention to
how his company pulled out of selling The
Home Depot retail and refocused their attention
on their core market — STAFDA distributors
|
 |
 |
With
the Baltimore Convention so close to our nation's
capitol, STAFDA invited John Satagaj,
president, Small Business Legislative Council,
to provide an update on pending legislation affecting
small businesses. He addressed health care, the estate
tax, and tax reform. STAFDA has been a SBLC member
since 2002.
|
The
highlight of the General Session was keynote speaker,
General Colin Powell. The audience
was struck by his commanding presence and genuine
likability. His one-hour talk cited examples of leadership.
As former U.S. Secretary of State, he shared his world
experiences with the group and his message was insightful,
witty, and powerful. After his talk, Gen. Powell,
a tool enthusiast, quickly toured STAFDA's Trade Show
before the doors opened to exhibitors and rep agents
for last minute set-up.
|
 |
 |
STAFDA
president, Marshall Jones, and STAFDA
vice president, Doug Hahn, prepare
to cut the ceremonial ribbon to the Association's
largest Trade Show ever with 815 booths! Over 20%
of Baltimore exhibitors didn't display at STAFDA's
'04 San Francisco Convention & Trade Show, so
there were plenty of new products and new suppliers
for distributors to see in the show's first five hours.
|
| Many
exhibitors offered show-only specials, prize drawings,
or unveiled new products or product enhancements.
Show attendance included 15% more distributor men
than last year which made exhibitors happy and kept
the aisles full. The STAFDA Show has grown over the
years allowing distributors to see over 35 different
product categories from hundreds of exhibitors under
one roof. |
 |
 |
Tuesday
morning featured four workshops covering pertinent
business issues. Tom Peters' former
protégé, Steve Farber,
gave an enthusiastic presentation, "The Radical
Leap: Leadership at Work and Beyond." He explained
how attendees can use his LEAP framework: Love,
Energy, Audacity,
and Proof to achieve business and personal success.
|
|
Construction
management expert, George Hedley,
led "The Business Success Blueprint" to
explain once systems are in place at a company, all
operations become turnkey. Accounting, sales, inventory,
and management can be streamlined by establishing
simple protocol that everyone can follow. As a large
general contractor in southern California, Hedley
related well to the STAFDA audience.
|
 |
 |
Mike
Marks returned to give a presentation on
"Designing a Workable Sales Compensation Plan."
Marks explained there is no "silver bullet"
or a one-size-fits-all compensation plan that can
be used as a model. However, he explained what key
factors should be included in a good compensation
plan and what should be avoided. He also stated that
his research showed conclusively that there is no
relationship whatsoever between a company's sales
incentive plan structure and its gain or loss in market
share.
|
| "Where
do you go to find good employees?" "How
can I recruit the right people?" "How can
I get existing employees to be more productive?"
Answers to these questions could be found in Dr.
Kathy Newton's "Employee-Based Management"
workshop. She covered the fundamentals on which to
build superior employee loyalty and motivate workers
to achieve even greater success. She also offered
tips on where to hire potential distributor-focused
employees and how to make smart hiring decisions.
|
 |
 |
Distributors
had another 4-1/2 hours Tuesday afternoon at the Trade
Show. To lure attendees into their booths,
some booths featured caricaturists, magicians, sports
personalities, and even a live radio show! Traffic
remained steady throughout the afternoon allowing
more business to be done on the floor.
|
Spouses/companions
had three Tour Options Tuesday including
a Baltimore City tour; a day trip to Annapolis; or
day in Washington D.C. Those who pre-registered for
the Washington tour were able to take a private look
in the White House. A highlight for those on the Annapolis
tour was to watch the Naval Academy's Noon lunch roll
call shown here.
|
 |
 |
Tuesday's
Closing "Viva Las Vegas"
Party gave everyone a chance to unwind after the Trade
Show or one of the tours. A hearty buffet dinner was
set beside large playing cards and dice while "Elvis"
performed on stage and another “Elvis” greeted attendees
at the party's entrance. The "Viva" party
helped to get people in the mood for next year's Convention.

STAFDA's
30th Annual Convention & Trade Show will
be held November 13-15, 2006 at the Las Vegas Convention
Center and Las Vegas Hilton.
The Trade Show will be in the North Halls at the Convention

materials will mail to members June 30
and on-line registration begins July 3
from the members-only section of our website. Please
mark your calendar to join us next November in Las
Vegas!
